RefracTech provides refractory engineering and design services for challenging applications.   Utilizing our knowledge of the latest material developments and advanced computational tools, we can provide new refractory designs or help to revise your current refractory lining to maximize it's service life.

Refractory Design & Material Specifications

RefracTech offers significant knowledge and experience when it comes to refractory designs and material selection.  We are familiar with a wide range of materials from competent refractory suppliers and a variety of applications, including syngas processes.  Our refractory designs feature the following:


  • Client-owned refractory designs that are tailored specifically to your high temperature  application and may be used independently of selected refractory manufacturers and installers.  This provides our clients with maximum economic and schedule control, as they are not locked-in to one supplier's products and forced to make decisions that are contrary to using the best refractory design possible.


  • Refractory material specifications provide minimal and target refractory requirements to be used for material selection and quality control during the procurement process.  RefracTech will discuss material property trade-offs during the conceptual engineering stage to ensure the selected refractory materials are capable of achieving the operating intent and required service life for your project.


  • Refractory assembly and shape drawings are provided in electronic format (CAD and PDF) for easy access and portability between potential suppliers and service vendors.

Thermal - Mechanical Analyses

RefracTech will perform thermal and mechanical calculations to validate the refractory design, ensuring that it meets all of your process requirements, while maximizing the service life of the refractory lining.  We use proprietary tools, including finite element techniques, to evaluate the lining in multiple load and environmental conditions to ensure compliance.  Clients will receive reports of all calculations, which may include:


  • Multi-dimensional heat transfer calculations to predict the refractory layer, vessel and other component temperatures for a variety of operating conditions.  Calculations are tailored for internal gas compositions and layer compression, a variety of ambient conditions, and may be performed in steady-state and transient modes.


  • Thermal expansion calculations based on the thermal profiles to predict the movement of refractory layers, to design any necessary expansion or control  joints within the refractory lining to minimize thermal stress.


  • Mechanical analyses may be used to understand the inherent compressive and tensile stresses that may be found within  the lining, allowing for assembly and shape modifications to reduce the potential for material failure and maintain compliance with the specified material properties.

Design Packages

RefracTech engineers refractory designs for all stages of your process.  Whether your organization requires conceptual or detailed designs, the packages may be customized for vendor selection and bidding purposes, installer qualifications, or other engineering reviews.  Our refractory design packages typically include the following:


  • Refractory material specifications to ensure proper selection and vendor compliance.
  • Refractory manufacturing drawings for the fabrication and quality control of special shapes.
  • Blueprints and assembly drawings to be used for installation and inspection services.
  • Bill of Materials for all refractory products in each piece of equipment, for procurement and inventory control.
  • All heat transfer and mechanical calculations, with service life predictions based on your operating parameters.
  • Refractory installation and maintenance instructions, including installation methods and dry-out / curing requirements.
